Fort Nelson - Hampshire County Council

A Grade I Listed building, Fort Nelson was built in the 1860’s as a garrison for 200 volunteers and regular army officers who would have staffed the Fort in time of wat. In 1938, it was converted to an area anti-aircraft ammunition store with ten large magazines. Today, Fort Nelson is a museum and part of the Royal Armouries, housing their collection of artillery.

Following a tendering exercise with HCC, we were very pleased to secure the redecorations to this Grade I Listed building. The Fort is open to the public daily – to facilitate this, all operatives completed a full site safety induction before being permitted on-site, supported by safe systems of delivery (risk assessments, method statements and Construction Phase Plan) in compliance with CDM 2015 and HASAWA 1974, so as not to affect the public’s enjoyment of the Fort whilst ensuring their safety. Each area of work was segregated with safety signage displayed which allowed the public to safely navigate around our activities.

The Fort is extremely exposed to the elements, and as such required extensive timber repairs that had to match the form and profile of the original timbers. Each stage of the repairs and redecoration was planned and overseen by the HCC Conservation Officer to ensure we completed the works as required for a Grade I Listed building, whilst achieving longevity and the prevention of further deterioration. Emphasis was given to the most vulnerable timber elements that cause an acceleration in timber decay. We are trained in the use of specialist resins that stabilise the timbers and once repaired and painted, cannot be seen.

Weekly, and attended by our Head of Operations, a full site review on quality, progress, and site safety, including Covid-19 compliance, was undertaken between us and HCC. During the meetings each new phase of works was agreed with strategically important aspects of the next phase planned to ensure total safeguarding of the Fort’s heritage, the public and in recognition to those fallen military personnel.
