Fire damaged convenience store - Plymouth
Working on behalf of our trusted client Total Design Shopfitting our teams were called to this fire damaged store in Plymouth. There had been a significant fire in the store, which was then mothballed whilst insurances and plans where organised to renovate the site. During the time the store was mothballed the damage got worse, with algae growing, rust setting in and adding to the damage damage caused by the smoke.
It was certainly time for the team to return this neglected site into a bustling store once again.
Although our office are based in Havant, Hampshire our teams work across the South. Arrangements were made for our team to stay near to the site and to collect all the relevant supplies from the local Dulux Decorator Centre in Plymouth.
Having a team with a wide range of skills and experience made T&H Contract Services the ideal contractor to undertake the painting and decorating on this project. Our IPAF qualified staff members used a scissor lift to access the high level prep and painting.
After the site was carefully cleaned of slippery algae our operations manager arranged for a scissor list to be delivered to site on hire. This enabled our IPAF qualified staff members to access the ceiling areas and beams easily and much more safely than using a tower. The team carefully prepared all previously painted surfaces, removing flaky paint and rust before painting the vertical beams in Bedec Multi surface paint in satin white. This was the ideal product choice for the team in covering the old painted surface without a high VOC content and using a water-based paint for easy clean up. Our company-wide focus on sustainability informs our product choices where practical our teams will use water based and low VOC paints.
Our client had specified a flame-retardant topcoat tinted in a deep grey colour, covering the exposed concrete floor slabs with a unified finish. The deep grey ceiling complemented the white beams and the grey and white fixtures that were added for merchandise.
Once the sales floor was completed the team focused their attention on the back of house areas, managers office and warehouse areas. Painting all walls in Dulux Trade emulsion tinted Chiffon White for a crisp, cool neutral throughout these hard-working areas. Any stained areas were treated using Zinsser cover stain to ensure good coverage of damaged areas. External metal stairs were painted in Dulux Metalshield Gloss Black with highly visible yellow nosings applied.
Water damage throughout the blockwork walls could have presented an issue for the team, however they were able to source and apply appropriate stain blocking products, in easy to apply aerosol format – which quickly and easily solved the potential problem. The prepared surfaces were then painted in Chiffon White to give a neutral finish throughout.
Due to the tight timescales across many of our works in conjunction with shopfitters our teams need to be flexible in their schedules. The team carried out the majority of the painting works during the night to allow for drying time and other trades to work in fitting out the shop during the daytime. This enabled the overall timescale to be kept on track despite the challenges faced at this particular site.
Once all painting and decorating works were completed our team handed the site over for the fit outs team to complete. The store is now fully open and back serving the local community in Plymouth.
